Care when receiving your carnivorous plants
Welcome to the fascinating world of meat-eating plants! When you receive your new plants, it is normal for them to need a little care to recover from the journey. Follow these tips to make sure they settle perfectly into their new home.
Condition of the plant upon arrival
Time in transit:
- Shipments within Spain: 2-3 days.
- Shipments to Europe: 5-10 days.
During this time, the plants are kept in a box without light and with high moisture (inside a plastic bag).
Possible damage:
- Although we send them well protected, transport may cause minor damage, such as loose soil or broken or blackened leaves.
What to do:
- Replace the soil if necessary.
- Cut only the black parts of damaged leaves, leaving the green areas so they can continue photosynthesizing.
First steps upon receiving it
Hydration and adaptation:
- During transport, the leaf cuticle becomes thinner, making them more prone to drying out.
Initial placement:
- Place it in a spot with partial shade and plenty of indirect light.
- Avoid direct sunlight during the first days, especially in summer or in areas with low humidity.
Initial watering:
- Keep the tray or saucer with about one finger’s depth of distilled or rain water to ensure constant moisture.
- Never let the soil dry out.
Gradual sun acclimatization
Days 1-3:
- Keep the plant in partial shade with indirect light.
- If the air is very dry, mist the leaves with distilled water 2-3 times a day to raise the surrounding moisture.
Days 4-5:
- Introduce the plant to direct sunlight gradually:
- Start with the early hours of the morning or the late hours of the afternoon.
- Avoid the strong midday sun.
From day 5-7 onwards:
- If you live in low-moisture areas, wait until the fifth day to expose it to direct sunlight.
- In moist areas, you can speed up the process.
Avoid these common mistakes
Drafts:
- Avoid warm and dry drafts, as they can quickly dry out the leaves.
Watering with unsuitable water:
- Use only distilled, rain, or osmosis water. Tap water can harm the plant.
Excessive initial sunlight:
- Do not expose the plant suddenly to direct sunlight, as it could get scorched.
After acclimatization
From the second week onwards:
- Your plant will be ready to receive the usual care according to its kind.
- Check our specific care guide for more details.
Extra tip
- Watch your plant:
- Each plant is unique. If you notice the leaves drying out or losing colour, adjust the light or moisture as needed.
